HERBS

General conditions

Herbs will grow most satisfactorily, and develop the most delightful flavors possible, given a place in the sun. A light, deeply dug, slightly alkaline soil that drains quickly of excess moisture is the other prime requirement for growing fine herbs. If the soil is heavy clay, mix coarse sand or well-rotted sawdust into the plot, and draw the soil from the sides to raise the level slightly for improved drainage. When locating herbs in a garden, arrange them in groups of plants that thrive under similar conditions.
