HERBS

Flower Group

Calendula and nasturtium are useful adjuncts to areas housing herbs such as basil and sweet marjoram.

Calendula, or pot marigold, adds bright patches of yellow and orange bloom to a planting, and yields petals for scattering on salads. Calendula petals were traditionally used as a substitute for saffron in rice, soups and stews and for colouring cheeses and cakes.

Patches or edgings of dwarf nasturtium offer colorful, fragrant flowers that make delightful little cut arrangements for the house. The young leaves, flower buds and flower petals add lively color and a peppery flavour to salads. Both calendula and nasturtium self-sow abundantly, for no-work, no-cost plants and flowers in succeeding years.

Nasturtium blossoms brighten salads and fresh fruit dishes.
