SCENE in the Pacific NorthwestGardeners here on the West Coast have a delicious sense of style -- here are a few examples.

Ravenhill Herb Farm near Saanichton on Vancouver Island was the scene for the first annual Feast of Fields in mid-September. This event is a fundraiser for the BC organization Farm Folk City Folk. Here are a couple of lovely bits of whimsey and inspiration from that day. Below left, is a hand-hewn stone bench, outfitted for comfort with a seat cushion of thyme. Women who attended Feast of Fields were given these lovely herb corsages (right) to wear while they strolled the farm and availed themselves of the scrumptious gourmet food and wine offerings.

This life-size model of a Volkswagon beetle, resplendent in red and white wax begonias, graces a boulevard island at a traffic intersection in Oak Bay, a suburb of Victoria, BC. Do you know of any other examples of civic gardening pizazz on the West Coast? Let us know. |

| Whimsical as this gardening idea is, it also embodies good gardening design principles. The "green" vehicle is poised to take off as soon as the light changes color, not at all out of place in its surrounding environment. |

Who are these chuckling little faces?
Putting its best faces forward, this fence, pictured below, acts as a garden gallery for a local West Coast potter, showcasing the pieces that didn't quite make it to the sale table. The merry little monks are garnished with clusters of plum-purple grapes, and served up on an array of broken pottery plates and bowls. Revelry gone too far? |
