FEAST OF FIELDS -- highlights of the first annual gastronomic gathering of Vancouver Island's finest fresh food and drink Feast of Fields was a fundraiser for Farm Folk City Folk, a coalition of urban and rural people who want to rebuild the bond between food and agriculture. |
| Held at Ravenhill Farm high above rolling farmland and overlooking the sparkling waters of Brentwood Bay, it was the perfect setting to celebrate the gifts Nature has bestowed on the West Coast. | ![]() The colorful Cassis Bistro menu pictured above featured Duck Confit with Leek & Gruyere Tarts. At right, Mahle House restaurant offered Roasted Briar Venison Chili Verdi with Roasted Roma Tomatoes & Swiss Chard in Grilled Tomatillos. Sounds complex -- tasted divine! |

Farm Folk City Folk is devoted to the concept of a sustainable food system -- economically viable and ecologically sustainable agriculture. They aim to reduce the distance between field and table.
And, close the distance they did on that sunny Sunday afternoon in September. In fact, field and table were as one at Ravenhill Farm. Hens scratched contentedly amidst the tents and tables, oblivious to all the people wandering around their territory with wine glasses in hand. A peacock stood imperiously in the barn loft pondering the clusters of people perched on bales of hay learning about preserving heirloom seeds. Back outside, the music from a classical trio wafted around the farm and drifted down the hillside. It was a day to indulge oneself in sensory overload. |

![]() Dunsmuir Lodge brought hand-made couscous, wild mushroom and roast squash sausage and served it up with their sourdough Ciabatta bread. |
![]() Miniature lamb burgers served on a tortilla crisp with fruit chutney from Malahat Mountain Inn proved to be a huge hit. |
